Rusting

Rust is the reddish or orange substance that develops on the surface of iron when it comes into contact with both air and moisture. It is composed predominantly of ferric hydroxide and ferric oxide, which are created through the process of oxidation.

Over time, as protective coatings break down due to factors such as age, damage, corrosive surroundings, or high temperatures, rust can manifest in different ways, ranging from small spots to more widespread and scattered occurrences. When the coating is exposed to water or a damp environment, it can result in rust staining.

To provide more detailed information, an interactive visualisation tool called Coating Radar Details is available. It offers correlation tables, degrees of rusting, Ri and Re scales of rust video, information regarding the formation of rusting, and a concise summary of ISO 4628-3.
