Cargo Oil Tanks (Crude Oil Tankers)

A crude oil tanker is a specialised ship designed to transport large quantities of unrefined crude oil. The oil stored in these tanks can harm the tank lining and may contain chemicals such as sulphur that can cause the coating to deteriorate.

A performance standard, as outlined in RESOLUTION MSC.288(87), requires specific parts of the tank, such as the deckhead and tanktop, to be coated. However, some crude oil tanks have complete coating coverage.

To protect the tanks, epoxy-based coating systems are recommended, with a light-colored top coat that facilitates easy inspection while in service.

To assist in evaluating the condition of the coatings in crude oil tanks, the Coatings Radar App has been developed. This app ensures a consistent and accurate assessment of the coating condition, following industry and international standards. Additionally, the app includes a 3D interactive evaluation tool to improve the assessment process.
