Marine

Corrosion in the marine industry costs billions of dollars every year. The environment is highly corrosive and ships and vessels have to be fully protected by coatings and cathodic protection. There are strict rules on the assessment of the coatings, specifically within ballast, cargo and oil tanks.

Guidelines such as the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) have recommendations for coating conditions such as Good, Fair and Poor, and the condition will dictate the frequency of surveys (Special, Intermediate or Annual)

GOOD 3 FAIR POOR
Breakdown of coating of area rusted 1 < 3% 3-20% > 20%
Area of hard rust scale 1 - < 10% ≥ 10%
Local breakdown of coating or rust on edges of weld lines 2 < 20% 20 - 50% >50%

Notes:

1. % is percentage calculated on basis of the area under consideration or of the critical structural area

2. % is the percentage calculated on basis of the edges or weld lines in the area under consideration or of the critical structural area

3. Spot rusting, i.e. rusting in spots without visible failure of coating

Coatings Radar App comprehensively details the inspection process for coating condition as per the IACS and the European Scale of Degree of Rusting for Anticorrosive Paints. 3d interactive new and aged tank coatings can be assessed to ensure the coating survey is accurate and consistent.
