Ballast Tanks (Double Bottom)
Ballast tanks in ships are specifically designed to carry water in order to maintain the trim and stability of the vessel. Though fresh water, salt water, or brackish water can be utilized, salt water is the most commonly used, even though it is corrosive and can lead to coating degradation and rust formation.
A performance standard has been established for protective coatings in dedicated seawater ballast tanks in all types of ships and double-side skin spaces of bulk carriers, as per RESOLUTION MSC.215(82). It is required that the ballast water tanks be fully coated, preferably with epoxy-based coating systems and a light-colored top coat. The purpose of the light-colored top coat is to facilitate easy inspection while in service.
To aid in the assessment of coating conditions in crude oil tanks, the Coatings Radar App has been developed. This app ensures a consistent and accurate evaluation of coating conditions, following industry and international standards. Furthermore, the app incorporates a 3D interactive evaluation tool to enhance the assessment process.
