Adhesion

Adhesion refers to the total forces of attachment between a dry paint film and its substrate. When a coating exhibits good adhesion, it will effectively protect and perform on the applied substrate for its intended lifespan, and often even longer. On the other hand, poor adhesion can lead to coating failure, early corrosion, contamination of surfaces or contents (in the case of vessels or tanks), equipment shutdown, and an unsightly appearance.

In order to identify any potential or inherent issues, meet specification requirements, perform ad-hoc inspections, or conduct maintenance or refurbishment coating surveys, adhesion tests may be necessary even when coatings appear defect-free. These tests are also commonly carried out in the event of disputes or guarantee claims.

It is crucial that coating adhesion tests adhere to relevant standards. The Coatings Radar App has been specifically designed to assist coating surveys in conducting various adhesion test methods, such as Pull-Off and Cross-Cut tests.
