Industrial Tests

Industrial tests are conducted on protective coatings used on steel structures to prevent corrosion and ensure the safety of the structure. Reputable suppliers provide these coatings, independently tested in laboratories according to industry standards such as NORSOK M-501 and ISO 12944.

Once the pre-qualification process is completed, the protective coatings can be applied to steel structures with confidence that they will provide adequate protection. However, adhering to the supplier's recommendations when applying the coatings is important.

On-site testing primarily involves physical tests and some basic chemical determinations.

Various techniques can be used, including tests for water-soluble salts, solvent rub tests to assess the curing of epoxy and zinc silicate coatings, solvent tests to differentiate between convertible and non-convertible coatings, amine bloom/blush tests, adhesion tests, pinhole/holiday detection, gloss measurement, surface profile analysis, dust tests, abrasive tests, pH tests, blast pressure tests, blotter tests, environmental tests, wet film thickness measurements, dry film thickness measurements, microscope examination, and hardness tests.

The Coating Surveyor responsible for inspecting the coating must thoroughly understand the testing methods, standards, and documents, as well as how to perform and record the tests.

This knowledge is crucial for ensuring the maintenance and longevity of the coating system.
